A former Gold Coast teacher has been charged after allegedly using artificial intelligence to generate explicit images of students and colleagues.
Detectives from the Gold Coast Child Protection and Investigation Unit launched a probe late last year after receiving reports of computer misuse at a prestigious private school in Arundel.
Police will allege the 73-year-old used AI software on his work-issued laptop to create illicit material depicting children and staff.
He’s been charged with one count each of misuse of Restricted Computer contrary to section 408E of the Criminal Code, make child exploitation material section 228B of the Criminal Code, possess Child Exploitation Material section 228D of the Criminal Code and possess/Controlling Child Abuse Material section 474.23 Of the Criminal Code (Commonwealth).
Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Aubort said the misuse of artificial intelligence to create child exploitation material is a serious criminal offence that causes real harm to victims, regardless of whether the images have been digitally generated.
“Technology is constantly evolving, but so are our investigative capabilities. Anyone who believes they can use AI or online platforms to create, possess, or distribute child exploitation material should expect to be identified and held accountable,” Detective Senior Srgt Aubort said.
“The Queensland Police Service will relentlessly investigate, identify and hold offenders accountable to protect children and our community.”
The former staff member’s employment has been terminated, with the man due to face the Southport Magistrates Court on August 6.
