Fire crews have warned a large bushfire that’s broken out on the northern Gold Coast, sending a huge amount of smoke haze across the city, could burn for days.
The blaze erupted off Kerkin Road in Norwell around 9pm on Monday, with dozens of firefighters working into the early hours of this morning to contain it.
Crews are continuing to patrol the area as it continues to slowly burn through difficult terrain, with containment lines currently in place.
A smoke warning has been issued for Ormeau, Pimpama, Norwell and surrounding areas, however residents as far south as Varsity Lakes report seeing and smelling the smoke haze.
“Thick smoke is affecting Ormeau, Pimpama, Norwell and surrounding areas,” QFES warned.
Police don’t believe the fire is suspicious at this stage.
What you should do:
- If the smoke is thick where you are, stay inside and close windows and doors.
- If you need medication to help you breathe keep it close.
- If you are worried about your health call your doctor or 13 HEALTH (13 432 584). If it is an emergency, call Triple Zero (000) now.
- If you are affected by the smoke you may need to leave the area.
- Check for warning updates often.
- Do not fly drones around the fire as they affect firefighting.
