A man has been charged after allegedly charging at Police with a knife and setting fire to a unit in Southport.
Police were initially called to a disturbance at the home on Walton St at around 5.30pm on Sunday, following reports of an armed person.
A male occupant is alleged to have threatened a 54-year-old man who was known to him with a knife.
The 54-year-old fled the unit and called Police before officers safely removed an 81-year-old woman.
The armed man is then alleged to have set fire to a bedroom before charging at officers with a knife.
The man was subdued and arrested while the fire was quickly extinguished.
Three officers suffered smoke inhalation during the incident and were taken to Pindarra Private Hospital for further treatment.
The armed man was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital for assessment.
The 53-year-old has since been charged with five offences, including two counts of serious assault of a police officer and one count each of endangering particular property by fire (domestic violence offence) and unlawful possession of weapons.
He is due to front Southport Magistrates Court today.
