The fate of the Gold Coast’s first beach bar has finally been decided, with council approving an extension of the trial.
The Kurrawa Beach Club will be allowed to operate for six months over summer, for another three years.
The decision came with some fight, however, with four councillors opposing the extension.

Speaking in the council meeting today, Councillor Hermann Vorster was strongly supportive of the trial extension, saying the space already had a “considerable amount of money” spent on activating that part of Broadbeach for social and economic reasons.
“In fact as part of the Commonwealth Games legacy program, we delivered a million-dollar event space at the Kurrawa terrace,” Cr Vorster says.
“Quite frankly given that event space is marketed as a place to come stage events and dip your toes into the sand it’s absurd to suggest that that’s not what we want for the Gold Coast.”
Councillors Brooke Patterson, Peter Young, Bob La Castra and Daphne McDonald voted against the move – but it was still passed.
The bar is located on the shores of Broadbeach, and is fully licensed.
