Winter has well and truly arrived in the South East, with Gold Coasters waking to an icy chill on Thursday morning.

It’s the coldest start of the year so far, with temperatures in some parts of the city, including Nerang, Highland Park, Canungra and Tallai plummeting to a teeth-chattering -1C just after 6am.

Residents in the other suburbs also found themselves reaching for an extra blanket, with Coolangatta, Varsity Lakes, Burleigh Heads, and Mudgeeraba also waking to an icy 3C around the same time.

Those in Tallebudgera and Bonogin would also be forgiven for struggling to get out of bed, with temperatures there also dipping to 3C.

The freezing cold weather is the result of a low pressure system in the Tasman and a high pressure system pushing cool air into Queensland.

The fresh starts are expected to continue until at least Saturday so it looks like the puffer jackets will be sticking around!
