A woman has tragically died after being hit by a ute on the M1, sparking two other crashes involving up to 10 vehicles.

Police say the fatal incident unfolded at Loganholme around 3.40pm on Monday, after the drivers of a white Audi hatchback and a black MG station wagon pulled over in the northbound lanes near Exit 30 to exchange details following a minor crash.

As the female driver of the Audi, believed to be aged in her 30s, returned to her vehicle, she was allegedly struck by a white Isuzu dual cab ute.

The woman suffered critical injuries and despite desperate efforts by paramedics, she could not be revived and died at the scene.

The driver of the Isuzu, a man in his 30s, stopped near the Logan Motorway exit at Tanah Merah a short time later and is continuing to assist police with investigations.

The horror crash sparked major traffic chaos, with two additional nose-to-tail collisions occurring shortly afterwards in the same northbound lanes.

The M1 remained closed for several hours as forensic crash investigators examined the scene, before reopening just after 8.30pm.
