A horror, fatal truck crash has shut down the M1 this morning from Tugun to Tweed Heads.
The truck smashed into a barrier in the southbound lanes at Tweed Heads West at around 2.25am.
The male passenger of the truck died at the scene, while the male driver was trapped in the wreck and had to be freed by firefighters.
The driver was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics for serious injuries before being taken to hospital in a stable condition.
A crime scene has been established, and the Crash Investigation Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
At the time of writing, the M1 is closed in both directions and diversions are in place.
