A search is underway on the Gold Coast for the occupants of stolen car that crashed on the M1.

Emergency services were called to the northbound lanes of the motorway in Mudgeeraba around 5.45am on Monday after a white Mitsubishi Lancer, suspected of being stolen, collided with another vehicle.

Two lanes had to be closed off for more than an hour in order to clear the scene, causing traffic chaos for the morning run.

The four occupants inside the Mitsubishi fled the scene on foot into nearby bushland.

A Queensland Police spokesperson has confirmed the group are now believed to be travelling in a Toyota Landcruiser, which was stolen from a shed nearby.
