New Queensland crime data has revealed a significant drop in victim numbers over the past year, coinciding with the first full period of the state government’s “Adult Crime, Adult Time” legislation.
Australian Bureau of Statistics figures show total statewide victims dropped to 277,411, a decrease of 12,038 than the previous year.
Specific offence categories saw notable reductions across the board, with robberies experiencing a sharp 13.4% decline.
Property offences fell by 4.2%, assaults dropped by 3.9%, and sexual assaults decreased by 1.6%.
State ministers have credited the positive shift to tougher sentencing laws, expanded police resources, and early intervention programs designed to curb repeat offending.
“Every victim of crime is one too many, but it is encouraging to see victim numbers moving in the right direction,” Attorney General Deb Frecklington said.
“These figures show there is still more work to do, but Queenslanders are starting to see progress under the Crisafulli Government, after victims were ignored and neglected by Labor,” the Attorney-General said.
“The Crisafulli Government remains committed to making Queensland safer. That’s why we introduced the toughest bail laws in the country to Parliament last week, continuing our focus on putting the rights of victims ahead of the rights of offenders.”
Youth Justice Minister Laura Gerber emphasised that while ongoing challenges remain, the downward trend signals early progress in restoring community safety.
“There is still more work to do but this data shows crime is down, victim numbers are down and we are delivering strong laws, and new early intervention programs and intensive rehabilitation to continue restoring safety where you live,” Minister Gerber said.
“Unlike Labor who want to wind back Adult Crime, Adult Time and raise the age of criminal responsibility, so youth offenders aren’t held responsible for their crimes, we will continue strengthening our laws to reduce victim numbers”.
