Police across the Gold Coast have stepped up their crackdown on e-bike riders after new laws came into effect across Queensland this month.
The new regulations mean under-16s are banned from riding e-bikes without parental supervision, while riders must also have a driver’s licence or a learner’s permit.
Riders must wear a helmet while speeds are limited to a maximum of 25km/h on roads and 12km/h on footpaths.
Officers across the Gold Coast have been engaging with riders to ensure they’re across the new laws, with several people caught out.
A 27-year-old man had his bike seized after being caught speeding on a non-compliant bike in Surfers Paradise while not wearing a helmet.
He was also issued with an infringement notice.
A 14-year-old Robina boy was fined after being caught without a licence on a non-compliant bike.
While a 57-year-old Tugun man had his bike seized and was also issued with an infringement notice.
“Police are reminding riders that the new legislation provides officers with additional enforcement powers, including the ability to seize illegal devices, while higher penalties now apply for a range of offences.
“The Queensland Police Service is committed to improving safety on our roads, footpaths and shared pathways through a combination of education, engagement and enforcement.”
