A major investigation is underway after a man died during a dramatic cross-border pursuit from the Gold Coast to northern NSW.
It all started just before midnight on Saturday, when a gun was spotted in a white ute parked in a Robina McDonalds carpark.
Police attempted to detain the driver, but he evaded officers and headed eastbound towards the Gold Coast Highway.
The vehicle failed to stop, prompting Queensland Police to notify their counterparts in NSW as the ute headed across the border.
NSW police tracked down the man at Banora Point and directed him to stop, but he failed to do so, sparking a pursuit through multiple suburbs before road spikes were successfully deployed in South Murwillumbah.
“The man continued to drive from police until finally stopping down an embankment on Kyogle Road, Kunghur, about 26km south-west of Murwillumbah, about 2am on Sunday,” NSW police said.
“Police established a perimeter around the Ford before Police Negotiators were deployed to speak to the man; however, as police approached the vehicle they found the driver unconscious”.
Officers immediately commenced CPR, however the man died at the scene.
He is yet to formally identified, however, is believed to be a 25-year-old man from Queensland.
A critical incident investigation is now underway into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The investigation will be subject of an independent review by the Professional Standards Command and overseen by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.
