A massive clean-up is set to get underway at The Spit today following an influx of illegal dumping.
It comes after frustrated residents shared video footage of local bushland covered in household rubbish, old bedding, and clothing, demanding council take immediate action against the culprits.
The City confirmed it had received multiple complaints about the site, with council cleaning crews set to be dispatched to the area today to clean up the abandoned trash.
Local councillor Darren Taylor has slammed those responsible, highlighting that illegal dumping costs ratepayers more than $7 million every year.
“Illegal dumping is unacceptable. It not only detracts from the beauty of our coastline but also poses risks to public safety, wildlife and the environment,” Cr Taylor said.
“It also comes at a significant cost to ratepayers, with illegal dumping and littering costing our city more than $7 million each year.
“I want to reassure residents that City officers continue to patrol The Spit and take enforcement action where breaches of Local Laws are identified.
“The City also employs a range of measures to deter illegal dumping, including community education, investigations and the use of CCTV where appropriate.
He warned anyone caught illegal dumping risks facing a fine of up to $3,454.
“While this matter is now being actioned, ongoing community vigilance remains important,” he said.
“If you witness illegal dumping or come across dumped waste, please report it through the City’s website or the Report a Problem App so that City officers can respond promptly.
“Homelessness remains a complex social issue requiring a coordinated response from Federal, State and Local Governments together with community organisations”.
