Gold Coasters are being urged to secure any loose outdoor items and dig out their winter woolies this morning as damaging winds sweep across the southeast.
A powerful cold front is lashing the region, prompting a severe weather warning from the weather bureau for damaging winds.
Forecasters warn that mountainous areas are set to bear the brunt of the system, with destructive gusts of up to 90 kilometers an hour possible.
“A strong burst of west to southwesterly winds will interact with topography producing damaging winds on the peaks and lee slopes of the ranges on Friday morning,” the Bureau of Meteorology said.
“Strong to damaging winds averaging 55 to 65 km/h, with gusts of around 90km/h, are expected over the peaks of the ranges about Main Range in the early hours of Friday morning.
“Winds are expected to ease by late Friday morning”.
It’s also triggered a strong wind warning for Gold Coast waters, with authorities urging boaties to remain alert.
While the mercury is set to reach a top of 21 degrees today, the wind chill factor is expected to make it feel between five and ten degrees colder than the actual forecast temperature.
