The humble suburb of Benowa is on the brink of undergoing a massive transformation.
Gold Coast Council’s planning committee recently voted in favour of a $1 billion “urban village” masterplan at the site of the Benowa Gardens Shopping Centre.
The mega-redevelopment is now officially headed to a full council meeting today for the final green light.
If approved, the project will reshape and refresh the neighborhood landmark into a modern, high-density shopping and residential hub.
The massive proposal features supermarkets, over 30 specialty retail stores and dining options, and a sprawling health and wellness precinct.
The plan also includes three residential towers featuring more than 400 apartments.
Hundreds of residents previously raised concerns regarding traffic congestion, pedestrian safety, and how the suburban area will cope with the sudden influx of thousands of new residents.
In response to the backlash, developers lodged updated plans specifically designed to deliver better traffic flow and improved safety features.
All eyes will now be on today’s Full Council meeting to see if councillors believe the adjustments are enough to grant the billion-dollar makeover its final approval.
