Four people, including two children, have been injured in a massive crash on the M1.

A police car was struck from behind by a Mitsubishi Triton southbound at Helensvale near Exit 62 at around 1.30pm.

The police vehicle had been pulled over on the side of the motorway performing traffic duties when it was hit.

Firefighters had to rescue a 55-year-old male police officer who had become trapped inside the vehicle.

He suffered chest and abdominal pain.

The 54-year-old female driver of the Ute sustained a serious leg injury, while a female toddler and female child were also injured.

All four have been transported to the Gold Coast University Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

The smash has significantly impacted traffic with congestion back to Ormeau as of 2.30pm and two lanes remain blocked.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.
