An opportunistic thief has stolen a car in Labrador while the owner stopped to help a child who they had hit.

The primary-school-aged boy was struck on Central Street around 3.15 this afternoon, with the driver immediately stopping to check on him.

In the meantime, someone jumped in the driver’s car and took off.

Witnesses report seeing an adult man jump in the vehicle and flee.

A QPS spokesperson confirmed police are currently undertaking patrols to try and find the stolen vehicle.

The boy sustained minor injuries and has been taken to Gold Coast University Hospital in a stable condition.

More to come.
