A man’s been charged with high-range drink driving and drug driving offences following a wild incident on the southern Gold Coast.

A blue SUV was spotted tearing through traffic in Coolangatta around 3pm Sunday, while the streets were packed out for the Gold Coast Pro surfing event.

Pedestrians were forced to jump out of the way, while the vehicle even drove up the wrong side of the road, and sideswiped another vehicle.

NSW Police managed to track down the SUV just minutes later on Wharf Street, Tweed Heads, and spoke to the driver, a 26-year-old man.

“He was subjected to a roadside breath test, which allegedly returned with a positive result,” a NSW Police statement reads.

“The man was taken to Tweed Heads Police Station where a secondary breath analysis returned an alleged reading of 0.181.”

“He was subjected to a subsequent oral fluid test, which returned an alleged positive reading to Cannabis and Cocaine.”

The driver has been charged with drive with high range PCA and illicit drug, drive recklessly/furiously or speed/ manner dangerous, and not give particulars to other driver.

Police also allege the driver failed to exchange details after he had hit another vehicle twice and drove off in a dangerous manner.

He due to appear in Tweed Heads Local Court today, Monday 1 June.
