The Coroner will begin a probe into the deadly Sea World helicopter disaster on the Gold Coast with an inquest to get underway today.

Two Sea World helicopters collided over the Broadwater in January 2023, killing pilot Ash Jenkinson, Sydney woman Vanessa Tedros, and British couple Ron and Diane Hughes.

Three others were seriously injured.

The coronial inquest will look into how the crash occurred and what caused it.

It will also examine safety management systems, including the landing sites, and pilot training.

The inquest comes after a damning report released by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau earlier this year.

The ATSB found a series of safety gaps that led to the crash, including a flawed system that was supposed to warn pilots of the presence of another helicopter.

“The operator’s procedures for scenic flights were not wholly specific to their operation and introduced variability in pilot decision‑making and conduct of the scenic flights,” the report found.

It also identified a defective radio system and a faulty antenna that meant a radio call was almost certainly not broadcast.
