A man accused of a sickening coward-punch attack in Southport has had his charges upgraded after the victim passed away.
Police have confirmed the 62-year-old man died in hospital this morning, three days after he was allegedly struck in the face outside a licenced venue on Scarborough Street.
“It will be alleged that around 11.30pm on 22 November, the 62-year-old man and a 32-year-old man were talking at the intersection of Scarborough Street and Railway Street when the 32-year-old man punched the 62-year-old in the face,” Queensland Police said.
“The 62-year-old man fell to the ground, striking his head on the pavement”.
He was rushed to the Gold Coast University Hospital where he was placed into a coma before sadly passing away on Tuesday.
His alleged attacker, a 32-year-old Coombabah man, was initially charged with one count of grievous bodily harm, but that charge has now been upgraded to one count of striking causing death.
He is due to reappear at the Southport Magistrates Court tomorrow.
