A Canadian tourist has suffered horrific injuries in a violent assault in Byron Bay.
The 28-year-old man had been drinking alcohol with about five other males, not known to him, in a park on Jonson Street when he was assaulted by the group at around 11.40pm Sunday night.
He managed to flee into bushland before flagging down a patrolling police car along Butler Street.
Officers rendered first aid to the man before he was taken to Byron Bay Hospital.
He was later transferred to Tweed Valley Hospital in a serious but stable condition with a fractured skull, bleeding on the brain and spinal injuries.
NSW Police say two of the males involved in the fight are believed to be aged about 16 or 17.
Investigators are urging anyone with information or who was in the area at the time with any relevant dashcam/mobile phone footage to contact Byron Bay Police Station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
