Queensland is bracing for a surge in temperatures this weekend, with the mercury on the Gold Coast forecast to hit a scorching 32 degrees on Sunday.
It’s prompted Surf Life Saving Queensland to issue a warning to beachgoers to soak up the early spring sunshine safely, with crowds expected to flock to the coast.
SLSQ General Manager of Emergency Management and Public Safety, Matt Thompson, said a few simple decisions before a trip to the beach could help Queenslanders make the most of the warmer weather safely.
“The warmer than normal temperatures for this time of the year is a great opportunity to get out and enjoy everything Queensland beaches have to offer, and we want people to have a safe and enjoyable day by the water,” Mr Thompson said.
“One of the best things you can do before heading to the beach is check where patrols are operating. Once you’re there, swim between the red and yellow flags and listen to the advice of our lifesavers and lifeguards.
“Our patrol teams are there to help people enjoy the beach safely, but beachgoers can also take a few simple steps to reduce their risk. Checking the conditions, staying within the flags areas and keeping an eye on children can make a real difference.
“Queensland has an incredible coastline, but every beach is different and conditions can change throughout the day. Just because the water looks calm doesn’t mean there aren’t rips or currents, so it’s important to treat the ocean with respect.”
He stressed planning ahead is critical, as patrol arrangements vary across the state ahead of the upcoming September school holidays.
“With the September school holidays approaching, our volunteer lifesavers will soon be returning to beaches across Central and South East Queensland, adding to the incredible network of patrols already operating around the state,” he said.
“In the meantime, there are still plenty of locations where lifeguard and lifesaver services are operating, so we’re encouraging people to seek them out”.
