A major Gold Coast transport project is set to be put on the back burner when the state budget is handed down today.

Stage 2 of the Coomera Connector will be delayed, with funding for the project to be pushed out for several years.

While design work for the section between Shipper Drive to Yawalpah Rd has begun, motorists won’t see any construction until at least after the next state election.

According to Seven, $1.8 billion that had been earmarked by the state for Stage 2 will now be deferred until beyond 2029-30.

But the state government is pointing the finger at Canberra for the delay, arguing the federal government needs to show us the money.

“My message to the federal government is we want to get on with the job of delivering the Coomera Connector and if they come to the party and they fund 80 per cent of the construction of the Coomera Connector, we’ll get the job started tomorrow,” Transport Minister Brent Mickelberg said.

“We want to work with the federal government in every regard.”
